Army National Guard Combatives Championship

Mark your calendars! The Army National Guard Combatives Championship is coming early this year. By popular demand the annual contest to crown the best fighters in the National Guard will be held on 26 thru 28 March 2010 at Ft Benning, GA. This years event promises to be bigger and better. Our goal is to have fifty or more fighters representing all states and territories registered to fight for the title of Combatives Champion. This contest provides an excellent opportunity to advance the Warrior Ethos, physical fitness, and fighting spirit in our National Guard Soldiers.
The tournament is open to all National Guard personnel, regardless of combatives experience and states or territories may enter as many fighters as they wish to compete for the Team Championship. The competition will be double elimination and consist of three separate rounds of bouts. Fighters will compete individually in brackets based on weight class and team points are awarded based on individual placement. Preliminary rounds will be governed by Standard Rules and consist strictly of grappling techniques with no strikes allowed. Semi-Final bouts will be governed by Intermediate/Pancraese Rules, which allows open handed strikes and knee strikes to the lower body. Final round bouts will be governed by advanced rules; allowing closed fist strikes and knee strikes to the upper and lower body.
Additional opportunities to referee, judge, or coordinate bouts are available to Combatives Level III and IV qualified personnel. Anyone interested in competing or working at the 2010 Army National Guard Combatives Championship should contact SFC Randolph at austin.randolph@us.army.mil or CPT Deaton at b.deaton@us.army.mil .

RICHMOND, Va. When Staff Sgt. Matt Stemmler, an instructor at the 1st Battalion, 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute, wrestled in eighth grade, he had no idea he would get the opportunity to compete in the 2010 Army National Guard Combatives Championship at Fort Benning, Ga., more than a decade later. Having just completed the U.S. Armys Modern Army Combative School, Level Three at Fort Benning, Stemmler is training to do just that.
